Snow, Thanksgiving and Ski Season Arrive in Vail Valley This Week

By Caitlin Row

As of Tuesday morning, snow was steadily falling. I'm watching it gently drop from the sky from Everything Colorado's office window as I write this blog, and I couldn't be happier. Why? It was sort of unexpected – at least in quantity – and I'm hoping the snow sticks on the ground for Thanksgiving. Snow makes everything look better around the Vail Valley.

Vail Mountain and Beaver Creek are opening on Wednesday, November 22. Ski season is here, folks! Check out early season conditions this holiday weekend, which is predicted to be sunny with highs in the 50s. After Vail Mountain's opening was delayed last week, cooler temperatures and more natural snow is helpful for Opening Day. It's been a dry autumn, but here's hoping snowfall ramps up in December.

With that in mind, here are my top picks for Thanksgiving week around the Vail area.

Events This Week

Beaver Creek Resort's World's Best Chocolate Cookie Competition coincides with Beaver Creek's Opening Day on Wednesday. Beaver Creek is known for its complimentary chocolate chip cookies served daily in the afternoon, so this will be a fun activity for all ages.

The 11th annual EagleVail 5K Turkey Trot will run from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, November 23. It starts at EagleVail Pool and benefits YouthPower365 and the Eric Spry Memorial Fund.

Beaver Creek's 37th annual Tree Lighting Ceremony is set for Friday, November 24. Activities are planned from 3 to 6:30 p.m. and Santa is expected to visit.

Shakedown Bar in Vail Village will host live music by Town Cavalry on Friday, November 24, and Brothers Keeper on Saturday, November 25.

Live music is planned for The Red Lion in Vail Village every day of the week.

More Vail Valley Things To Do

Big Bear Bistro is opening for breakfast on Opening Day this Wednesday, November 22, at 7:30 a.m. The breakfast menu will offer easy options to take on the lift, like breakfast sandwiches, burritos and cinnamon rolls. Sit-down options include crepes, pancakes. French toast and omelettes.

Beaver Liquors in Avon will be open this Thanksgiving, November 23, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Head there for your last-minute libation needs!

Small Business Saturday is November 25. Small business owners around the Vail area may be offering some good shopping deals for after-Thanksgiving shoppers. Everyone should shop "small" and support locally owned businesses this weekend. I think it's always a good thing to support local retailers. Money spent in this way supports Vail Valley businesses and families! Check out a full list of Vail Valley shops here.
