Memorial Day weekend offers beer, barbecue and sunshine in Vail

By Caitlin Row

Springtime in Vail means blooming mountain beauty, the beginning of golf season, a start to a long mountain-bike season down valley – and unpredictable weather.

With rain and snow recently soaking Vail, it's good news that we can expect a sunny and relatively warm Memorial Day Weekend.

This time of year also marks an early transition into summer activities. Expect to see more outdoor food and beer events along with live music in our events calendar starting in June.

With that in mind, here are my top picks for Vail Valley This Week.

Head To Beaver Creek

This holiday weekend means big plans at Beaver Creek Resort. The 14th annual Beaver Creek Blues, Brews and BBQ Festival is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, May 27-28. This varied event is chock full of activities for the senses spanning beer drinking, barbecue vendors and lots of live music.

Beer lovers should check out the Microbrew Festival on Saturday. It will showcase more than 80 beers from more than 30 Colorado breweries. That's a lot to taste, folks!

Masters of barbecue will be on hand selling everything from wings and ribs to pulled pork and brisket. Vendors are competing for cash prizes and bragging rights. Attendees can vote on Saturday and Sunday to determine the People's Choice winner.

Musicians on tap include North Mississippi Allstars on Saturday and Kenny Neal on Sunday. Opening acts include Packrat's Smokehouse, Delta Sonics and Heather Gillis Band.

Betty Ford Alpine Gardens in Vail is hosting an exhibit showcasing the symbiotic relationship between flowers and pollinators. A donation of $5 is suggested. The exhibit is in Ford Park at the education center.

Walking Mountain Science Center hosts a variety of regular activities – from bird walks to back-country hikes and even fly-fishing instruction for kids.

End-of-Season Dining Deals

Terra Bistro in Vail Mountain Lodge is offering 50% off all entrees.

La Tour Restaurant and Bar in Vail Village continues to offer 40% off spring dinner entrees and 30% off select wines. Lunch entrees still come in at $13.95.

NorthSide Coffee & Kitchen in Avon is doing a three-course dinner for $29.95, along with a prime rib and frites dinner for $19.95.

Zino Ristorante in Edwards is currently offering a two-course meal for $31.

The Gashouse, also in Edwards, is doing 30% off dinner entrees and 30% off all bottles of wine.

Though many big dining discounts may be coming to a close at the end of May, here's a list of off-season dining deal highlights. It's a good idea to call to confirm whether a dining deal is still in place and to make a reservation. Holiday weekends tend to be busy in Vail regardless of time of year.
